If you are looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-path destination, we highly recommend visiting the Petroglyphs of Chicchitara.
These ancient rock carvings are one of the most impressive and diverse examples of pre-Columbian art in the Andean region.
Located in the Palpa region, the Petroglyphs of Chicchitara consist of thousands of rock carvings that date back to the pre-Inca era.
What makes these petroglyphs unique is the great number of images that are carved into the rocks, depicting a wide range of subjects.
Among the carvings, you can see animals, humans, geometric shapes, and mythological creatures.
The Petroglyphs of Chicchitara are a unique and fascinating destination that is not to be missed.
In addition to the incredible Petroglyphs of Chicchitara, our tour also includes a visit to the Nazca Lines desert, one of the most mysterious and fascinating attractions in Peru.
We will drive across the desert and stop at a metallic tower from where you can spot some of the famous figures carved into the ground.
After visiting the Nazca Lines, we will also see various Palpa Lines, which are similar geoglyphs located in the nearby Palpa Valley.
The Palpa Lines are not as famous as the Nazca Lines, but they are equally impressive.
Finally, we will enjoy spectacular views of the Palpa Valley, which resembles an oasis in the middle of the desert.
The valley is surrounded by stunning landscapes, with towering mountains and lush vegetation providing a stark contrast to the arid desert.
Part I: Nazca Lines Metallic Tower.
Our tour begins at 08:30 h, with our guide meeting you at your hotel in Nazca.
The Petroglyphs of Chicchitara are located approximately 50 km north of Nazca, and on the way, we will stop at the Mirador, an observation tower that provides a great view of some of the Nazca drawings.
From the tower, you will see the representation of a tree, a frog, and a lizard, along with various geometric forms and straight lines.
Part II: Palpa Lines Metallic Tower.
After enjoying the Nazca drawings, we will continue driving north, passing through the Ingenio Valley and arriving at the Palpa desert.
Here, we will take a detour to show you an amazing site: various human representations etched on the slopes of the hills.
Archaeologists believe that these drawings are even older than the Nazca figures, with many scholars attributing their creation to the old Paracas Culture.
While there is also a tower in this area, most of the drawings can be seen clearly from the ground level. After visiting this incredible site, we will drive to the town of Palpa where we will stop to buy some water.
Part III: Petroglyphs of Chicchitara.
To reach Chicchitara, we will follow the course of the river towards the Andes, driving about 10 kilometers to reach a zone known as “The Widow.”
This is where we will start our visit to the Chicchitara complex, made up of various small hills full of large rocks that overlook the valley.
The carving rocks are spread on the slopes and at the top of the hills.
Our knowledgeable local guide will take you through the site, starting with the popular petroglyph known as the Rock of the 3 Ages, a fascinating group of human carvings.
Additionally, you will see representations of various animals, including a two-headed snake and an Andean Cat.
To find the most spectacular petroglyphs, we will need to climb uphill, where we will find even more carvings of birds, monkeys, llamas, foxes, and even geometrical forms.
After exploring the incredible Petroglyphs of Chicchitara, we will return to the city of Nazca, where the tour concludes.
